-Alec Lightwood has sleep problems
-And the story goes like this
-So he, Izzy, and Jace will come home late from a hunt, and Izzy and Jace will fall asleep and Alec will pace around his room
-His brain just won’t go into sleep mode for whatever reason
-So he paces really quietly so he doesn’t wake anyone up 
-And he looks at the clock and groans because oh great it’s five am and he did it again
-Definitely falls asleep some time past five most nights
-But this kid just wakes up at the crack of dawn
-He downs at least three cups of coffee just to keep from falling asleep during training
-And Alec is really good at hiding it from everyone so his family have no idea
-In fact, the first time his parents hear of it is when they all come back from a hunt
-Everyone has a few scratches, nothing major, and Alec takes three steps into the Institute and literally collapses
-Everyone freaks because they’re like “did he get poisoned???”
-Maryse wants to call a warlock ASAP
-But then Jace checks him and then everyone’s confused because he’s sleeping?
-Half an hour later Alec comes to and is forced to come clean
-Jace now asks him every day if he got enough sleep
-Alec lies every time. “yah Jace I’m fine”
-Then Clary comes and screws everything up
-Alec does not want her finding out
-Add the stress of Valentine and stuff, and he’s lucky to sleep five minutes
-And that’s why he’s so snappy and aggressive in CoB
-After Magnus’s party he’s realized “yah I’m not getting any sleep any time soon”
-The best rest he’s gotten in days/weeks/possibly months was when that Greater Demon nearly killed him
-Now to add to that when he DOES finally fall asleep it’s usually pretty restless
-Lot’s of twitching, groaning, tossing and turning
-Oh, and kicking. Alec definitely kicks
-Everyone hates having to wake him up but when they do he groans and hugs the pillows and wraps the blankets around him tighter
-Because maybe he can go back to sleep I mean he still has that last lingering thread aaaand it’s gone
-Of course it’s gone and he still feels like crap
-Clary tried creating a rune but they never work for very long
-Magnus even cast a spell on him once
-It lasts twelve hours, and when Alec wakes up he says to never do it again

Bonus:
-After Edom, he’s plagued by nightmares, and he wakes up in the middle of the night 
-So that’s even less sleep

i see your sleep-deprived!alec headcanons and i raise you well-rested!alec headcanons

- Alec Lightwood used to have problems with sleeping. Sometimes it’d get to the point where he’d literally fall asleep WHILE standing and once the OT6 know about it, they do whatever they can to make sure Alec gets some sort of sleep

- Sometimes Alec falls asleep during Clave meetings and like Jace just glares protectively at anyone who dares to even think about poking Alec’s arm with another moronic question. 

- Sometimes Isabelle bumps into her brother in the early hours of the morning just kinda sitting in the kitchen, wide awake. She never asks questions or bugs him about it but simply just starts chatting about her day like ‘And then ____ did this like who does he think he is’ while she starts making her brother something warm to drink (making drinks is the only thing she’s really competent in in the kitchen) and just. Isabelle’s voice is so soft and sweet and at no point at all he’s falling asleep, his cheek pressed against the kitchen counter, the warmth of the drink (still clutched in the palm of his hands) slowly dissipating. And Izzy looks at him fondly like ‘I can’t believe u just fell asleep, I didn’t even get to the best part)

- And Alec wakes up one of two ways 1) A pillow awkwardly shoved under his head or 2) tucked in his bed (yes Izzy woke Jace up and yes Jace halfheartedly grumbled the entire time)

- who ELSE LOVES ALEC AND IZZY MOMENTS JUST

- THE OT6 watching movies together and like!! Alec falls asleep, tucked next to Magnus and everyone lets out a breath like ‘FINALLY’

- Clary memorizes what alec looks like asleep, worry lines gone and his pink lips parted and just DRAWS HIM (i’m in love with artists please give me a moment)

- Alec and nightmares. So Alec’s always been a restless sleeper but a lot of the time he wakes up with his heart pounding or the echo of a scream or just jolts upwards and sometimes it’s too much. He ends up always waking Magnus up when they start to sleep together and at first he tries to hide it but his body shakes so bad and Magnus is like??? Anyways, sometimes when it happens, Magnus is snoring softly and just tucks Alec in closer. Sometimes they can’t go back to sleep and they just talk…. about everything. Sometimes just knowing Magnus is there, and Magnus is REAL, is okay enough. Sometimes it’s not but Alec’s working on it and they aren’t as terrible as they used to be when he was alone, in his small bedroom. 

- The dreams with Max are the worst. 

- ok wtf these were suppose to be happy what is happening 

- So Alec is CONSTANTLY cold and half of the time he can’t fall asleep because he’s a grade A icicle. Like sometimes he’s curled up in a ball in his bed (which isn’t as comfortable as u would think with his gangly limbs) and just??? it’s so cold, he’s always been cold, it’s partly why he wears such big sweaters all the time. CUE Magnus and Izzy shopping together and buying him the warmest PJs like they’re so soft!!! and warm!!! made of fleece or some shit and Alec is so cuddly in them (also, once he sleeps with Magnus, he realizes that he’s literally in bed next to a warlock heater but anyways). ALEC! IN! CUTE! PAJAMAS! 

- just Alec being well rested without circles under his eyes and taking on the world

There are two sides of the fandom, I guess. But nice. I just drowned in cuteness.
